Productivity

Is everyone else doing something productive right now? I'm just sitting here wasting time.

Wish you were here.

In my continued efforts to waste as much time as possible, I was wondering if anyone has some book suggestions. I just finished a few good ones (The Other Side of Heaven, The Fire of Faith, and All Things Bright and Beautiful) and I'm looking for some more.

I would love to know your favorite book of all time as well as any good books you've read lately. (Or even any books you would read if you weren't so busy being productive.)

  1. I recently finished "Broken Things to Mend" by Jeffrey R. Holland. It was so good I'm reading it again. It's basically his conference talks from the last ten years.
Have you ever read "I am A Mother" by Jane Clayson Johnson? That's a good one too. I'll lend them to you if you ever want to read them. But since we see each other so often, you might have to wait a few weeks! Happy reading!

  2. If you want some reading about relationships, I really like: "Bonds That Make Us Free: Healing Our Relationships, Coming to Ourselves" by C. Terry Warner. I rarely actually have that book at my house (even though I've obtained it twice) because I'm always lending it to people. I also like "Helping and Healing Our Families: Principles And Practices Inspired by 'The Family: A Proclamtation to the world'." And I think every family should have the book: "Strengthening Our Families: An In-Depth Look at the Proclamation on the Family" by David C. Dollahite. (We have two and I only lend out one of these at a time. When it was just Dave and me, we did our family home evenings from this book. I think it's pretty much a good summary of my Family Science degree at BYU.)

As far as just good reads I've read in the last few years, I really like the #1 Ladies Detective Agency books, "The Count of Monte Cristo" (unabridged), and "A Thousand Splendid Suns." The last book is really sad and really good at the same time. I currently have "The Chosen" checked out to read again as it's on my list of books to read as part of Baby Love's homeschooling. (I'm getting that list from this website: www.tjed.org/classics.) Oh, that reminds me, another good book is "A Thomas Jefferson Education."

  3. How about Twilight? :) Just teasing. I read Sandra Gray's book "Traitor" and really liked it. (LDS fiction) I'm sure all my favorites are books you've read... "The Giver" "Les Miserables" I also liked the "Da Vinci Code" and "Angels and Demons". A friend just recommended "The Book Thief"

  5. You know I always recommend fluffy reading--I'm usually looking for escape, not inspiration. But I did just finish "The China Study" and you're welcome to it.
Have you read all of James Herriot or just that one?

  7. Ummmm it is a miracle for me to make it through a book these days, but I am almost done with "Home" by Julie Andrews. I am obsessed with the Sound of Music, so it was a must read to learn about her phenomenal life. I have really enjoyed it.

  9. One of my favorite books that I read in high school is "Love is Eternal", it is a biography of Abraham Lincoln told through the eyes of Mary Todd Lincoln. I started The Glass Castle, it looked good, just moved and didn't get to finish. Nowadays it is strictly school readings.

  10. hmmm - well it's 11:30 and I'm supposed to be packed and up by 5:30 tomorrow and I just thought I'd check your blog instead. And look at the plethora of book suggestions! If you are looking for a "can't put it down" but not life changing book - The Hunger Games. I just finished it and it was very entertaining.

  11. I have no new book suggestions but I'm loving the list from everyone else. I have been reading old fairy tales for inspiration, and boy are they disturbing! Why would cacooning think you need to read books on healing family and relationships? Is is because you have such a disturbing blog? Tee Hee

  13. After much work and millions of 20 second reading sessions I finished Lincoln, by Gore Vidal. Awesome. He's a genious and he just had his 200th birthday so it's a must this year. I'm glad for the comments, because now I'll read Love is Eternal.
