English
Alicia: Jenny, if you could go anywhere in the world on a mission, where would it be?
Me: I would love to go to England because it's a foreign country but they speak English.
Rachel: They speak English in England? Oh, yeah, they say: "G'day Mate!"
Me: No, that's Australia.
Alicia: Yeah, Rachel! They say, "Top o'the mornin' to ya!"
Me: No, that would be Ireland.
Alicia: Oh. How about, "Cheerio!"
Me: Now you're talkin'.
Jenny, have you read Austenland by Shannon Hale. There is a character that gets all that very wrong. It's funny. :)
ReplyDeleteAlways happy to see a belligerant post.
Funny! When I spent 3 days in South Africa there were times that I missed entire sentences of what they were saying in "English." And Casey tears his hair out sometimes while talking to the guys in India.
ReplyDeleteThat was a perfect end phrase, by the way.
My cousin went on a mission to England and when he came back he said "Cheerio" all the time and it cracked us up. I find it very fascinating and funny that their language is so different from ours.
